BC Government, Corrupt Tribal Council members and their corporate friends are targeting one of the last ancient rainforest watersheds on Vancouver Island for Clearcutting (Walbran Valley)

This is an emergency post and a call to action as the stakes are high and this is time sensitive.
Thus, my writing about my time exploring and documenting all the beauty, wisdom, regenerative potential and hope embodied in the Fairy Creek valley will have to be postponed.
The neighboring endangered watershed is being targeted by government and corporate profiteers for clearcutting.
The BC government claims to be "green" and "sustainable" yet they have approved the logging of one of the only two intact ancient temperate rainforest watersheds left on Vancouver Island.
Western Forest Products started clear cutting 8 old growth cut blocks in the headwaters of the Walbran Watershed on Pacheedaht Territory August 22nd.
If we don’t draw the line industry -enabled by the provincial government- will keep logging these last elders of the forest until there are non left to log.

August 25th, the blockade was built with a giant cougar sculpture guarding the road along side Pacheedaht First Nation Elder Bill Jones.

We’ve dealt with a few loggers, and have visited the logging site where industry clearcut through a large creek that flows into the Walbran river. We will stay here, demanding an end to old growth logging.”
Day 9 video update below (source) “Still going strong! On August 24th, a giant cougar sculpture was erected on a logging road in the Upper Walbran Valley to prevent the further destruction of old-growth. The art piece has great symbolism.
The cougar was constructed from the twisted branches of ancient cedar trees salvaged from burn piles left behind in clear cuts. These ancient limbs once held mats of lichens and moss, providing habitat for marbled murrelets, newts and hundreds of insects found nowhere else on the planet. When the ancient trees go, so do these arboreal ecosystems which take over 100 years to begin to grow (and millennia to become what the few ancient forests left are today).
The effects of this are vast, but one significant example is that deer eat the lichen from these old-growth forests in the winter when food is scarce. Because of a 60% loss in old growth on Vancouver Island deer are starving, and it is estimated that deer populations have fallen 60%. Subsequently, the cougars are starving and Vancouver Island, once one of the cougariest places on the planet, has seen a 50% decrease in cougars.
The final touch on the cougar’s construction was to add lichen and moss from the limbs of the cut trees in the Upper Walbran. This brings the sculpture to life.
The cougar is there to remind us that we are losing more than our ancient trees. We are losing all the life in an ancient forest.” (source)

Elder Bill Jones — a guardian of Pacheedaht ancient old growth forests, a voice for the voiceless — is being sued. Not for wrongdoing, but for daring to protect what little remains of the old-growth forests. Forests that have stood for thousands of years — long before our laws, long before our greed.
And now, in a time when wildfires choke the skies and the planet warms with every passing season, Government still chooses profit over protection. We still silence the very people who warned us.
Was there free, prior, and informed consent? Of the Pacheedaht band members? Not in boardrooms. Not in courtrooms. And certainly not in the hearts of those who live on the land.

I was recently in the only other ancient temperate rainforest (primary) watershed (outside of a park) left on Vancouver Island and I can tell you these are sacred places of immense wonder and incalculable beauty, medicine and nourishment for the body, mind and spirit.

This lawsuit means that an injunction could be approved as early as next week allowing the RCMP to start arresting ancient forest, water and land defenders.

Any propaganda you hear about how clearcutting these last few patches of old growth is required in order to provide jobs for loggers or prop up the economy is a fallacy. There is an abundance of 2nd and 3rd growth (biodiversity stripped) plantation “forest” at this point which can provide endless job security and lumber for our needs, the difference is that slaughtering the thousand year old life protecting rooted beings in these ancient forest areas make the government and their corporate friends more profits.
The forestry regime in the statist racketeering territory of "Canada" follows a fundamentally colonial (exploitative and anthropocentric) model, in which present day profiteers (and those brainwashed by the corporate propaganda) bank on the suffering of their great grandchildren and forest lands are treated as terra nullius. The assumption is that nature is capital, a resource to be managed and extracted for modern industrial interests' perpetual economic benefit. Well that profiteering model will soon hit a wall as there is less than 2% of the primary old growth left.
The forest fire resistant, landslide preventing, soil protecting, air cleaning, water cleaning, salmon habitat supporting and water creating old growth is decimated, and so are the hopes for a future worth living in for ten or more generations of humans going forward that will have to pay the karmic consequences for the greed and ignorance of those acting in the present (they will pay the price in having their homes destroyed by landslides, floods, their regular water access and quality diminished, their salmon access diminished or totally destroyed, their air sickened and thinned and their ability to perceive the original architecture and art of the Creator that was intended for the forests of this land stolen from them in the name of instant gratification and profits for those alive today).
This idea is implicit in Canada’s forestry policy and history, most notably in the policy of “sustained yield”. Sustained yield is based on the concept that old-growth forests are an asset to be converted into tree farm plantations, managed by ‘science’, to yield timber resources in perpetuity.
It leads to forest management regimes that involve stripping forests bare, killing their many inhabitants (Ecocide), then replacing them with monocrop tree farms devoid of “competing” vegetation and unable to support the wildlife populations that once called those diverse habitats home. This intensive tree farming system, designed to maximize timber yield, removes the very biodiversity that makes the forests so fire resistant, life nourishing, water cleaning, beautiful, soil stabilizing and salmon run enhancing in the first place.
Right now, as we speak, corporate profiteers are attempting to clear cut 8 blocks of primary forest the head waters of the Upper Walbran Valley (right above the last provincial park on the island to house intact primary temperate rainforest watershed).
These corporate and government profiteers are assaulting one of the last few watershed scale Forest Fire Preventing habitats we have functioning on this continent.

I share their concern regarding corporate bribes and influencing academic institutions but I think these people pointing the finger solely at corporations are missing the even greater threat that is capturing the minds of scientists and forestry specialists, aligning their statements with corporate greed and resulting in ecological devastation, and that is how they are captured by the Statist Religion.
Here in Canada the statist thugs profit from and enforce corporate exploitation and extraction of rare eco-systems (while putting out PR about how "green" and "sustainable" they are). They use paramilitary RCMP units to attack any indigenous people that attempt to protect the forests or rivers of their ancestral lands. Their vested interest in perpetuating that model is indoctrinated into children in government funded schools.
Clearcut logging of old growth (fire resistant) forests and replacing them with logging industry plantations with unnatural spacing of trees at all the same age (which ignorant people often erroneously refer to as “forests”) is the the single most contributing cause of the unnatural fires we have been seeing in recent years. It does not require a PHD to take a satellite imagery maps of clearcut areas and cross reference them with where fires start and then get out of control. I have done that and the correlation is striking and unavoidable.
In places where trees are capable of becoming large enough and old enough where their thick bark and spacing naturally mitigates extreme fire events, we are seeing logging industry plantation fires (not forest fires).
I was just in Fairy Creek on Vancouver Island (the last intact old growth forest waterhshed on the whole island) and I saw evidence of fire and how it interacts with that forest ecosystem. I saw where the lighting struck, the smaller trees that burned adjacent to the starting point, the charred bark on the thousand year old (healthy) hemlock, cedar and fir trees and the trajectory of the fire going uphill where its momentum was slowed by the inflammable giants and then it stopped. I saw this event played out over and over written in the bark of ancient trees and in the soil (which by the way was full of biochar, enriching the health of the trees and water absorbing potential of the soil).
Within the context of an old growth forest fire is very rarely a threat to the forest community and thus does not threaten the surrounding and/or contained human communities.
The valleys adjacent to Fairy Creek however (full of freshly clearcut primary old growth and large swaths of second and third growth monoculture plantations) told a different story about the relationship of those trees with fire. When lightning struck the closely spaced young trees were like tinder and they burned with intense ferocity spreading up and over the clearcut ridge lines and into adjacent valleys gaining momentum.
The truth about these deluded and sometimes bought and paid for pro-clear cutting forestry “experts” is that they are not only captured by industry propaganda, they are first and foremost captured and driven by the statist religion (which is inherently anthropocentric and innately ecologically degenerative).
History has taught us that the racketeering operation that is Statism farms humans just as Teal-Jones and Western Forest Products Ltd. farms forests. They both decimate the natural beauty, diversity, uniqueness and God given gifts of that place/being and replace them with implanted monocultures of trees/thinking intended to perpetuate exploitation and extraction in the name of greed, domination, human exceptionalism and the myth of “progress”.
Just as the farmed trees grow in ways that make them weak, the farmed humans in the factory farms for humans called nation states can also be crippled from achieving their true potential, their minds are weak and imaginations stunted (when they prioritize their allegiance to a flag over their allegiance to the Earth). Their priorities distorted by the inherently immoral institutions that they have been indoctrinated to worship and (like the farmed trees) this prevents them from connecting with and contributing to the larger community of life they are a part of, making them susceptible to being exploited and more of a liability than a contributing symbiotically connected member of a community.
Thus, it is not just corporate capture of academic institutions we must address, but also the intrinsically ecologically degenerate nature of the statist regimes we were born into and taught to put on a pedestal.
As long as we are swearing allegiance to flags and statist regimes that thrive on exploitation of rare ecosystems in the name of greed first (and thinking of the watersheds and bioregions that support our lives second) we are committing treason against the Earth and sacrificing the health, joy, potential to perceive beauty and livelihoods of our great grandchildren on the alter of “progress”, “civilization” and instant gratification.
In places like BC, you hear a lot about "wildfires" and "forest fires", yet 90% of the fires that burn there are in planted logging industry monocultures (that have been doused in glyphosate, soil organisms crippled and underground fungi decimated by large track machines). Those are one species plantations of young trees, not "forests" and they are not "wilderness" anymore either, thus, the fires are neither "wild" nor "forest" related, and are in fact, logging industry monoculture plantation failure fires.
Well my friends, this brings us back to the focus on this post today. The good people peacefully standing up to protect one of the last few ancient (forest fire proof/preventing) temperate rainforest watersheds on Earth are likely about to be targeted by the government’s nastiest thugs (the RCMP’s voluntarily signed up for, highly paid "C-IRG" now re-branded as "The Community Response Unit-BC (CRU-BC).
The evidence is clear, we live in a time when our tax dollars are being used to fund the creation of vicious teams of corporate mercenaries that use a combination of invasive surveillance, psychological warfare and physical brutality to pave the way for corporate interests to destroy the last remaining primary forests of the temperate rainforest and the boreal forests of Canada.
These are hired thugs and they are choosing to play a part in killing ancient beings, for profit, and destroying rare places of indescribable beauty. If we allow them to continue, they will ensure that our great grandchildren are not able to know the majesty, beauty and soul healing gifts that the beings in these ancient forests offer to share with humanity.
Do not let the re-branding fool you, these are trained thugs, bullies and psychological warfare specialists (paid for by your tax dollars) being used by corporations and our corrupt statist government to facilitate the pillaging of the last few intact ecosystems in Canada.
We cannot let the corrupt government, their enforcers or the corporate pillagers they enable and support to destroy these last few ancient forest watersheds.
I implore you (if you are able) to get up and do what ever it takes to protect these last few ancient forest watersheds (regardless of what the judicial system and federal/provincial law says about it) so we can preserve those expressions of God’s symbiotic genius, landscape/ecosystem architecture and the Earth’s living memory of health and wholeness for future generations.

Follow McClure Main for 16 km, drive past McClure Lake until you reach a four-way intersection. From here, head directly across the intersection driving DOWN the valley on Walbran Main. Follow this road for 3.7 km, at which point you will see a spur road to your left, drive several hundred meters up this road until you reach camp.

Corrupt Pacheedaht bought and paid for Tribal Council members have aligned themselves with corporate industry and colonial government in the interest of getting their hands on some of the profits and selling out the well being of their grandchildren for short-term profits.
The Pacheedaht colonial manipulated “elected” government has made the following greenwashing statement:
“The protesters’ blockade undermines our Nation’s authority to govern our Traditional Territory and disrupts the important work we are doing to protect and manage our lands responsibly”
said Arliss Daniels, chief councillor for the Pacheedaht First Nation, in the statement. (source)
So she wants us to believe that clearcutting old growth is “responsible management” of the ancient ecosystems that her ancestors worked to protect and tend for millennia?
Sounds like a pack of lies to me.
Considering that same council approved the clearcutting of Fairy Creek in 2021 for quick profits, I think it would be unwise to believe anything her and fellow profiteers are saying about “protecting” old growth and “responsible management” in the Walabran watershed.
The Pacheedaht colonial greed thinking infected Tribal Council members have a history of approving clearcutting of endangered old growth primary rainforest on their territory while they simultaneously claim they are about “protecting” and “responsibly managing” forests in their domain.
Here is what happened in 2021 when the corrupted Pacheedaht tribal council tried to sell out their grandchildren, the living earth and our tell rooted elders for quick profits in Fairy Creek:
“The logging company Teal-Jones has been granted permission to clearcut the area. It has signed an agreement with the Pacheedaht First Nation. The area to be logged is only 20 hectares, according to Teal-Jones. The company has gone to court and won injunctions forcing the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to arrest the protesters, remove the numerous camps around the area, and get to its very profitable work of clearcut-logging an old-growth forest. “ (source)
Pacheedaht Chief Councillor Arliss Daniels is also using clearly fallacious government/logging industry propaganda and questioning the motives of protestors at the encampments and their professed love of nature. “They left a disgusting mess,” she said, adding “the community was left with the trash, plastics, condoms, and needles left behind”.
Needles and condoms Arliss? Seriously, that is pretty weak.
I was in Fairy Creek after the protests and I saw a pristine ancient forest ecosystem. I doubt that woman has ever been into the ancient forested areas in question in her life, as she appears to be more info cashing logging corporation checks from her office and living the “civilized” life.
Sadly, sometimes the attack on indigenous culture that came in the form of Residential Schools and the sustained bombardment of capitalistic, materialistic, “civilized” propaganda has very effectively stamped out the place based wisdom, animism and original worldviews which lived in the hearts and minds of those that had protected these lands on Turtle Island for millennia before Europeans arrived.
In some cases, these people with indigenous blood have been very successfully assimilated, so much so, that they are now willing to turn their backs on the living Earth, regurgitate colonial/corporate propaganda and choose Wendigo behavior in the interest of getting a quick buck.
Chief Sonny Gagnon of the Aroland First Nation here in Ontario is another unfortunate example of this type of betrayal. He signed a 20 Million bribe deal allowing government and corporations to carve into the bones of Mother Earth in the "ring of fire" region in Northern Ontario. This will poison the rivers, lakes and result in clearcut boreal forest, getting him cash now, but resulting in a less full and beautiful life for his grandchildren.
This Chief Councillor Arliss Daniels and her collaborators appear to be similarly interested in selling out.
We that recognize the immense importance of protecting these last few regions of intact primary rainforest cannot allow sell outs like that to impede our efforts. It is obvious to me that her ancestors would not approve of her actions here and we must imagine how we want to be remembered as ancestors by those that come after we are gone.
Pacheedaht elder Bill Jones remains a man of integrity and vision and he is opposing the sell outs on the tribal council.
Jones has also filed a legal challenge in Federal Court against the Pacheedaht First Nation, claiming the nation unlawfully consented to forestry activities within its territory without consulting him as an elder.

Thank you for your courage in standing up for our tall rooted elders Bill (despite what any capitalistically assimilated and/or easily pressured humans may have to say about it).
I honor you as a champion for the living Earth and a true elder, carrying not just years of experience on Earth, but years spent well, years where you chose courage and humility over instant gratification and quick fix temptation.

BC Supreme Court refuses to grant preventative policing powers, issues limited injunction against Elder Bill Jones and forest protectors
The BC Supreme Court has granted a limited injunction to Western Forest Products and Huumiis Ventures against Pacheedaht Elder William Jones and others protecting the Upper Walbran Valley, while refusing to grant preventative policing powers, recognizing the risk of police overreach.
The injunction is anticipated to take effect later today, making it illegal for Elder Bill and other named individuals to interfere with the logging company’s access to the threatened old-growth forest stands. Justice Amy Francis drew parallels between the Fairy Creek Blockade injunction where 1,197 arrests were made in 2021 and the Walbran blockade that was established last month. In her remarks she expressed concern regarding widespread police overreach at Fairy Creek in declining a request from the company to include a term in the injunction authorizing preventative police powers.
“I’m very sad — my people are now in the thick of destroying our land. I’m disappointed the judge prioritized the logging company’s interests over my rights and the health of the forest,” says Elder Bill Jones, now 85, in response to the decision. “However, the judge did not give the logging company everything it asked for, recognizing the high risk of police overreach.”
Elder Bill Jones and forest protectors emphasize that this struggle is not over, and are renewing their call for an end to logging and permanent protection of the Upper Walbran.

Walbran valley ancient forest defenders still need your help.
Corrupt Pacheedaht tribal council cares more about profits and cashing in on logging ancient forests than they do preserving these rare places of healing, medicine and beauty for future generations. We must call out their cowardice and dishonor for what it is and stand along side those First Nation and non-First nation forest defenders that understand the importance of protecting the last few intact ancient forest watersheds we have left.
We live in a time when some First Nation peoples in so called "Canada" have decided to internalize the sickness of greed and the parasitic relationship with the Earth that is capitalism which was imposed on them by imperialistic colonialism (such as the Huu-ay-aht First Nation tribal council and their C̕awak ʔqin Forestry industrial logging company or the corrupt Pacheedaht tribal council members such as Arliss Daniels promoting clearcutting ancient forests for profit, or Chief Sonny Gagnon of the Aroland First Nation who signed a 20 Million bribe deal allowing government and corporations to carve into the bones of Mother Earth and poison her rivers in the "ring of fire" region in Northern Ontario for lithium mining).
To those that support the clearcutting of ancient forests for profit: If you continue to worship money instead of having reverence for your living Mother Earth you may have to find out one day (when the last ancient forest watershed is cut down and the last river turned into a muddy flood zone and the last salmon habitat crippled, that you cannot eat money.
Please share this so that those who have lost their way can help remember the sacred duty we have to think of the 7th generation that comes after us in how we live and interact with the ecosystems that support us.
No matter what corrupt government propagandists, corporate think tank spin doctors or bought and paid for tribal council members tell you, you in your heart of hearts know that cutting down forests that took thousands of years to become what they were today can never be done "responsibly" nor "sustainably".
We either protect the few sections of ancient forest that are left, or we choose greed and are effectively spitting in the face of God and our great great grandchildren for a paycheck today.
Choose courage and integrity over greed, we know the choice is not easy given all that is at stake, but we believe in you to make the right choice and will honor your courage in choosing the side of Mother Earth over profits.

Thankfully, we have Pacheedaht First Nation elders like Bill Jones, others from his nation, and many other courageous people from other First Nations that have not given into greed and still value the teachings of their ancestors to protect the ancient forest integrity for future generations and only harvest what we need for building (not what we want for selling for profit).

I recently wrote about my time exploring and documenting all the beauty, wisdom, regenerative potential and hope embodied in the Fairy Creek valley here, well now, her sister ancient forest watershed is under threat and needs your help.
The neighboring endangered watershed is being targeted by government and corporate profiteers for clearcutting.
“SOS - COMP TO CAMP : RCMP are at Cougar Camp. They have arrived in full force and have disabled communications. Now is the time to get in your car and start driving. The more people who are there, the safer everyone will be when psychopathic goons with badges let their true colors show.
Today (nov, 26th) the RCMP raided Cougar Camp. Three people were arrested two in the cougar and one in the sky pod.
A treesiter is in the cut block ready to spend the night up in the trees.
We have established a new camp on the way to the old camp.
Spirits are high as we received visit from non-corrupted indigenous leaders

DIRECTIONS
From Lake Cowichan head towards Honeymoon Bay. From Honeymoon Bay drive 21 km along S Shore Rd until the road splits, turn left onto Caycuse Main.
Follow Caycuse Main for 11 km until the road splits, then turn left onto McClure Main.
Follow McClure Main for 16 km, drive past McClure Lake until you reach a four-way intersection. From here, head directly across the intersection driving DOWN the valley on Walbran Main. Follow this road for 3.7 km, at which point you will see a spur road to your left, drive several hundred meters up this road until you reach camp.
