Historically the Church hierarchy did have some power to shape policy and yes it did fuck up a lot. It’s still fucks up as much anything organized by humans. In my opinion, ancient (pre-Christian) Gaelic culture was far from perfect, but in terms of social technologies, ecological ethos, botanical knowledge, poetry, linguistics and women’s rights, the Druids and their Brehon successors were leaps and bounds beyond many cultures of Europe at the time.
Another one of the issues I have with the proclamations of Christian institutions and the teachings that are promoted in many churches is something I addressed in my most recent note referencing Derrick Broze's words, and that is the anthropocentric values at the center of those institutions and teachings.
The Church went on a mission to demonize, dehumanize, dismiss and replace place based animistic cultures (which while they may not have been perfect, were cultures that saw forests, rivers and mountains as imbued with a spirit and thus deserving os respect). I expand on the difference between anthropocentric dogmatic religions and place based decentralized animistic worldviews (and their ecological as well as psychological impacts) in the essay below.
My oldest brother was born out of wedlock in Ireland in 1954. My mother age 17, was supported by nuns until she met and married my
father in London. Without the help she’d not have been able to keep her child. She kept the Faith & relied on the Church all her life. The church helped sustain us all as my parents left everything and everyone behind to move to Canada in 1958 and raised 7 children. Both my parents were disgusted by the grossly biased and distorted stories promulgated by anti-Catholic forces. Orphaned and neglected children were a result of poverty, genocide and British colonization. None of these conditions were exclusive to mother and baby homes. The entire population, except for the ruling class, suffered short lifespans, poor medical and dental care and high infant mortality rates.

Here in Canada many of the concentration camps (“residential schools”) were also run by the church. I grew up with a survivor and heard his stories and saw his scars first hand, so I know what happened.

The “Romanus Pontifex” was a Papal Bull dictated by Pope Nicolas V on January 8th, 1455 stated:
“Invade, search out, capture, vanquish and subdue. All Saracens and pagans whatsoever, And other enemies of Christ wheresoever placed... And reduce their persons to perpetual slavery…”
These nefarious Eurocentric edicts and fallacious concepts were used as a framework to “legally” describe the “discovery” of new and unknown lands, assigning the right to European Christians to assume ownership of “discovered” lands (regardless of who was already living there and tending that land).

It made possible the Indian Act and all of its genocidal laws and policies including the residential school system, removal of Indigenous Peoples from traditional lands to reserves, criminalization of languages and cultural ceremonies, and the creation, recognition and later denial of Treaty and Indigenous rights.

MULTIPLE Church organizations (not only Catholic) were contracted to the governments for orphanages, crisis pregnancy homes and residential schools.
The GOVERNMENTS responsible for racist colonialism USE the Churches etc. as tools of colonialism, leave them underfunded and then throw them under the bus when they’ve served their purpose. The rhetoric of the Doctrine Of Discovery emerged from the church, the top levels of that institution, and then it was used as a weapon by governments.
I have thought about that kind of alternative life potential for myself as well. It was my great grandparents and grandparents that immigrated here for me but I wondered what it would have been like for my life if they had not and I was born in Ireland or Scotland instead. But then I did my research for my article on Saint Patrick’s day and discovered that Institutionalized mass murder of Gaelic speaking Irish occurred (just like institutionalized mass murder of indigenous children occurred here in Canada).
Babies of unwed Gaelic mothers were taken from them by force by the Catholic Church and killed or left to die in their concentration camps euphemistically called 18 “Mother and Baby Homes”.
In 2021, an investigation concluded that about 9,000 children died in Mother and Baby Homes in Ireland between 1922 and 1998.
Mother and Baby Homes were institutions in which approximately 80,000 unwed mothers gave birth to their children and were separated from them. Many children were then trafficked for adoption or were subject to medical experimentation. These homes were established and overseen by Catholic orders, and were closely related to the infamous Magdalene Laundries which housed and worked an estimated 30,000 women.
And I wondered to myself, what if my great grandmother had been one of those Gaelic women imprisoned by the church and my granddad wound up a Gaelic baby experimented on for big pharma, killed and dumped in a sewer (like so many did)?
It seems that both here and there have their dark downsides goverment wise, but the one thing that Ireland and Scotland do not have anymore that Canada does still have, is intact primary ancient forests on the scale of an entire watershed.
And for someone like me, that sees the ancient forest as my cathedral (as my Druidic ancestors did) having access to sacred forests like that is so important to me that I would choose Canada for that reason alone (regardless of how shady the goverment is here).
I know how you feel. I have felt that way before. I suppose I have seen how (justifiable) violent uprisings can be infiltrated, co-opted, COINTELPRO-ed and distorted by the media to end up serving the oligarch’s goals so I try to focus on ways to boycott their entire infrastructure and empower people to be able to avoid and deal with these thugs if need be without bloodshed. As much as these thugs may deserve to receive some of their own medicine, that avenue of resistance is rigged by advanced counter-intel operations to backfire on those resisting oppression (painting them as crazy domestic terrorists etc).
On Vancouver Island it took thousands of people deciding to get up, charge into the forest and block the roads and for hundreds of them to be filming when ever they could with multiple devices so that footage could get out to the few media outlets willing to cover the operations. At that point, and with over a thousand people being arrested, the spotlight of public attention forced these opportunistic, parasitic and violent corporate mercenary cockroaches to slither away and seek cover.
So, one of the best forms of defense (aside from developing guerilla tactics for disappearing into the woods and being stealth sabotaging etc) is shining a light on their operations so that the normies are jolted out of their blissful comatose state to see what their tax dollars are really funding. At that point, the majority see these psychos beating down women so that logging corporations or mining corporations can pillage endangered habitats and they actually give their head a shake and start looking accusingly at their government (forcing the government to backdown and pretend they care to appease the brainwashed statists). It may be a temporary measure, but at least it has saved a few places like Fairy Creek and brought awareness to the reality of these psychotic agents of the state.

Growing up, I had this undefinable (because it had no substance) pride about being Canadian. We thought we were so great because of 'healthcare', which never rung true for me. I'm actually more comfortable now, knowing the truth about things. The whole nationalist thing is a psy-op anyway.
I can relate to that Nina. Even before I was bombarded with the government propaganda in the government funded indoctrination centers called “public schools” I felt a deep connection with, love for and reverence for this land and her people.

Both French and English colonial powers in what would later be known as Canada used the Doctrine of Discovery to claim Indigenous lands and force their cultural and religious beliefs on Indigenous peoples. Once Canada was created, the Doctrine of Discovery influenced the imposition of national, colonial laws on Indigenous peoples. This is because it denies the validity of longstanding systems of Indigenous governance and sovereignty.
It has never been renounced. It remains the basis for Canadian law and as such continues to impact Indigenous Peoples. It gave sovereignty or title of Indigenous traditional lands and territories to the Crown. It remains today “the legal justification for the colonial occupation of our lands and our nations. As long as Canada bases its existence on that Doctrine, it is hard to characterize it as anything other than a racist state where one race has been given the right to subjugate and confiscate the lands of another.”
It made possible the Indian Act and all of its genocidal laws and policies including the residential school system, removal of Indigenous Peoples from traditional lands to reserves, criminalization of languages and cultural ceremonies, and the creation, recognition and later denial of Treaty and Indigenous rights.
That edict from the Church later morphed into laws passed by the supreme court in the United States of America in the 1800-s which made it law that some were seen as real humans with rights, and others (that stood in the way of the established oligarchy and their minions) were seen as “savages”, property and primitives.
I think our human family can do better than anthropocentric and racist religious institutions and flimsy preferential “constitutions” proffered by involuntary governance structures.

I am not “anti-catholic” nor "anti-Christian", however, I am opposed to any system, institution or rhetoric that encourages imperialism, violence, superiority delusion complexes, oppression and anthropocentrism. I am opposed to those cowardly, hubristic and immoral actions and viewpoints whether they are promoted by someone describing themselves as an Atheist or a Christian or a Druid or a Muslim or an Indigenous person. Bullies and tyrants can wear all sorts of veils under which they attempt to obscure their malice and their cowardice, and religiosity is a favorite to wear as a camouflage.
Roman Catholic church replacing place based ancient indigenous cultures (with their advanced polyculture based horticultural practices) with the European imperialist's feeble and primitive monoculture farming, is, in and of itself, a good enough reason to abandon the ethically flimsy and ecologically illiterate institution of Romanized Christianity.

Jesus was clearly a man that did not advocate nor condone violence, thus, anyone claiming to follow his teachings while also condoning/supporting institutions that are built upon and perpetuated by violence, imperialism, superiority delusion complexes, oppression and anthropocentrism, are hypocrites.
The merging of Church and State (via Constantine's carefully manipulated Council of Nicaea) is where the institutions describing themselves as Christian began to become corrupted.

The truth is, if Jesus of Nazareth ever had the chance to come back and see the horrors and atrocities that institutions like the Roman (Constantine distorted) Catholic church and its minions have perpetrated in his name, he would shake his head in disgust and say something like "Forgive them God, for they know not what they do".

I abhor, racism, colonialism, military industrial empires and EVERYTHING these systems have done to indigenous people in the western world. The fact that racist, imperialist governments and monarchies have used Churches as tools of imperialism is deplorable. Churches have historically tried to evangelize indigenous people because they are mandated by their beliefs to do so. Churches also have a duty to feed, clothe, shelter, educate, nurture and protect which they strive to do in every situation. These efforts, like any human endeavour have various degrees of success and will NEVER be appreciated by those who oppose the very idea of religion.
I find it sickening that GOVERNMENT policies and actions are always completely sidestepped. It’s GOVERNMENTS that are ultimately responsible and THEY used Churches and charitable organizations to fulfil those policies. MULTIPLE Church organizations (not only Catholic) were contracted to the governments for orphanages, crisis pregnancy homes and residential schools.
The GOVERNMENTS responsible for racist colonialism USE the Churches etc. as tools of colonialism, leave them underfunded and then throw them under the bus when they’ve served their purpose. Church haters are in their glory when the horrors of institutionalization and colonialism are revealed and can conveniently blame the most prominent and persecuted target which is the Catholic Church. Why is the Church always the scapegoat instead of the GOVERNMENTS who are actually 100% responsible? Particularly the Catholic Church? the Jesuits were here long before there was ever a thing called the Canadian government, and their vicious and duplicitous behavior towards indigenous communities is well documented.

The rhetoric of the Doctrine Of Discovery emerged from the church, the top levels of that institution, and then it was used as a weapon by governments.
I have thought about that kind of alternative life potential for myself as well. It was my great grandparents and grandparents that immigrated here for me but I wondered what it would have been like for my life if they had not and I was born in Ireland or Scotland instead. But then I did my research for my article on Saint Patrick’s day and discovered that Institutionalized mass murder of Gaelic speaking Irish occurred (just like institutionalized mass murder of indigenous children occurred here in Canada).
Babies of unwed Gaelic mothers were taken from them by force by the Catholic Church and killed or left to die in their concentration camps euphemistically called 18 “Mother and Baby Homes”.
In 2021, an investigation concluded that about 9,000 children died in Mother and Baby Homes in Ireland between 1922 and 1998.
Mother and Baby Homes were institutions in which approximately 80,000 unwed mothers gave birth to their children and were separated from them. Many children were then trafficked for adoption or were subject to medical experimentation. These homes were established and overseen by Catholic orders, and were closely related to the infamous Magdalene Laundries which housed and worked an estimated 30,000 women.
And I wondered to myself, what if my great grandmother had been one of those Gaelic women imprisoned by the church and my granddad wound up a Gaelic baby experimented on for big pharma, killed and dumped in a sewer (like so many did)?
It seems that both here and there have their dark downsides goverment wise, but the one thing that Ireland and Scotland do not have anymore that Canada does still have, is intact primary ancient forests on the scale of an entire watershed.
And for someone like me, that sees the ancient forest as my cathedral (as my Druidic ancestors did) having access to sacred forests like that is so important to me that I would choose Canada for that reason alone (regardless of how shady the goverment is here).

This makes me sick.
I know how you feel. I have felt that way before. I suppose I have seen how (justifiable) violent uprisings can be infiltrated, co-opted, COINTELPRO-ed and distorted by the media to end up serving the oligarch’s goals so I try to focus on ways to boycott their entire infrastructure and empower people to be able to avoid and deal with these thugs if need be without bloodshed. As much as these thugs may deserve to receive some of their own medicine, that avenue of resistance is rigged by advanced counter-intel operations to backfire on those resisting oppression (painting them as crazy domestic terrorists etc).
On Vancouver Island it took thousands of people deciding to get up, charge into the forest and block the roads and for hundreds of them to be filming when ever they could with multiple devices so that footage could get out to the few media outlets willing to cover the operations. At that point, and with over a thousand people being arrested, the spotlight of public attention forced these opportunistic, parasitic and violent corporate mercenary cockroaches to slither away and seek cover.
So, one of the best forms of defense (aside from developing guerilla tactics for disappearing into the woods and being stealth sabotaging etc) is shining a light on their operations so that the normies are jolted out of their blissful comatose state to see what their tax dollars are really funding. At that point, the majority see these psychos beating down women so that logging corporations or mining corporations can pillage endangered habitats and they actually give their head a shake and start looking accusingly at their government (forcing the government to backdown and pretend they care to appease the brainwashed statists). It may be a temporary measure, but at least it has saved a few places like Fairy Creek and brought awareness to the reality of these psychotic agents of the state.

Growing up, I had this undefinable (because it had no substance) pride about being Canadian. We thought we were so great because of 'healthcare', which never rung true for me. I'm actually more comfortable now, knowing the truth about things. The whole nationalist thing is a psy-op anyway.
I can relate to that Nina. Even before I was bombarded with the government propaganda in the government funded indoctrination centers called “public schools” I felt a deep connection with, love for and reverence for this land and her people.
Over time, those close to me (that had been brainwashed by statist propaganda in their own youth) and the goverment propaganda systems themselves that were forced upon me in government schools conditioned me to associate that deep love and admiration for this land I was born on and the people I share it with as “patriotism” and relating to having pride about this relatively new entity called “Canada” (built on genocide, lies, theft and duplicity) but later in life I was able to decolonize my mind and realize that the love I feel for this land and her people has a source that is much more genuine and ancient than any kind of imposed statist sociopolitical identity.
