It is indeed a comprehensive and effective con job, they provide bread and circuses to keep the plebs distracted, I too was a hoodwinked for many years and complicit in promoting the statist religion.
I am so glad to hear the serviceberry and currant are doing well :) I have been getting huge harvests from my adult plants this year so you have many nutritious berries to look forward to in the years ahead. And you could grow seedlings from the seeds in berries you harvest and share with friends increasing the health and food sovereignty of our community. That is the beauty of a culture based on reciprocity, gift economics and having faith in the Creator’s design and natures abundance (rather than flags and governments as many do now).

The region most refer to as "Canada" has been under full control of the oligarchy since day one and the plutocrat compliant government here has used advanced multigeneration indoctrination psyops and ensured the territory has been (and continues to be) full of obedient tax cattle, open for corporate industrial pillaging, tax payer funded ethnic cleansing ops and medical experiments on "undesirables", so there was no need for the oligarchy to make up some reason to demonize the region and her inhabitants as a whole for kinetic proxy war pillaging/war profiteering (as has been the case in Gaza, other regions of the middle east, Ukraine, Russia, Venezuela, Iran and elsewhere).
So, "better off" in the sense that we are not being blown to pieces by Palantir's tax payer funded AI powered autonomous killing machines and predator drones in an overt genocidal campaign (as some humans are on Earth are now) perhaps, but, in a way, the war being waged here is much more insidious.
It is a war waged by the government on its own citizens, they lace the food with poison (tax payer subsidized glyphosate soaked GMO "food"), push for genome contaminating / heart crippling injections for children and kill many helpless ones in the process, they expand the M.A.I.D. program to include non-terminal "mental" conditions and then re-define anyone that does not agree with the government's abusive/exploitative policies as "crazy conspiracy theorists" and mentally unstable "extremists", they use the psychiatric industry to legalize police kidnapping dissidents and drugging them, they promote surgical mutilation of children in "trans-human" behavior modification operations in schools, they inculcate people to feel that they are safe and protected by an entity that is slowly poisoning them and slipping a dagger between the ribs. Its more of a slow motion murder here and less of a blowing up schools filled with children.
What has happened and is happening in the places you list that are being overtly targeted by tax payer funded mass murder programs is appalling and nefarious, though it is at least clear to those people what they are up against. Here many trusting people are Stockholm syndromed right into being slowly killed by a smiling government that tells you how safe and effective their programs and products are.
Also, Trump may be a deranged Pitbull suffering from dementia, but one might argue that a slick smooth talking ex banking cartel operator (like Carney) is much more dangerous, so why is Canada better off than USA, in your opinion? (I am not there and have not been for years, so I cannot know what people are really experiencing there and a rarely have the time to research such things while I am trying to empower people to cultivate food sovereignty locally and protect what few forests we have left here against our own government).
FYI - What is now known as the "USA" as well as the region many now as "Canada" were both originally considered to be part of "Turtle Island" by some pre-colonial cultures of this land.
